A Thank You to All Vestry Members

Dear Friends,

The New Year is a time for vestries to reflect, plan and reenergize, as well as to engage in opportunities for creativity, innovation and change. On behalf of the Episcopal Church Foundation (ECF), I want to thank all new and returning vestry members as you embark on another year of service to your congregation and the wider Church.

We are living in extremely divisive and fragmented times and now, more than ever, our Church needs to boldly proclaim the Good News of the Gospel to our broken world. This requires leaders at all levels, especially the congregation, who are grounded in discipleship and who are open to responding to God’s call to love, peace and justice – leaders like you. As vestry members you play a critical role in actively engaging in God’s mission in the world and encouraging the members of your local faith community to do the same.

Having served on vestries for almost twenty years, I know that you will experience both ups and downs as you face the challenges and opportunities of your congregation. But with faith, commitment, as well as some energy and enthusiasm, you can and will make a difference and can accomplish much more than you initially thought was possible. Please know that you are not alone and that ECF is here to support you on your leadership journey. As an independent, lay-led organization that has been working with vestries for many years, our prayers are with you as you continue to discern God’s call in your work and ministry.

We are providing a few resources listed below that you might find helpful as you begin another year of vestry service. As you move forward with this important work, please share your thoughts, ideas and stories with us. We always love to hear from you.

With joy, gratitude and blessings for a spirit-filled New Vestry Year!

The Vestry Resource Guide:
Whether you’re a first time vestry member or a seasoned veteran, the Vestry Resource Guide is an essential tool to help leaders discern, plan and implement local mission and ministry for congregations of all sizes and shapes - available in English or Spanish, and in both print and e-book formats. Pursuant to a grant from the Lilly Endowment National Initiative to Address the Economic Challenges Facing Pastoral Leaders, ECF is releasing the first edition of the Finance Resource Guide in the spring of 2019. As a companion to the Vestry Resource Guide, this publication will provide guidance to church leaders on how to manage the financial resources of their parish in a smart, strategic and missional way.
