Mission-Driven Partnerships Between Episcopal Parishes and Schools: NAES Network
03/08/11

Donald V. Romanik, ECF President, writes about fostering mission-driven partnerships between Episcopal parishes and schools for Network, the monthly newsletter of the National Assoication of Episcopal Schools (NAES).  In his article, Romanik outlines some of the differences between Episcopal congregations and Episcopal schools that inform governance and decision-making.  Specifically, he asserts:

  • Congregations are, by nature, more "exclusive" than schools;
  • Vestries are not school boards;
  • Students are expected to graduate; members of congregations are expected to be there for life;
  • Schools rely on a set tuition income; congregations rely on voluntary contributions;
  • Generally, Episcopal schools are perceived to be in demand and on the rise while Episcopal congregations are perceived to be in decline
